‘Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.’ So said Scott Cameron, and I agree with him. The more I travel, the more places I discover that still have to be explored. Apart from a trip to the Norwegian fjords, which is outside Africa so doesn't count on this exclusively African travel blog, here are my 6 travel highlights of 2014, in random order.

Soon it's going to be the summer holidays and we’ll all be looking for fun stuff to do around South Africa. I asked five travel bloggers to share their favourite things to do along the themes of food, culture and fresh air in 5 South African cities. Here’s what they picked in the cities they know best.
By Roxanne Reid Cold, wet, wintry weather. Not ideal for a seaside destination like Goukamma Nature Reserve on the Garden Route, between Sedgefield and Knysna. Luckily CapeNature was one step ahead of us at Otters Rest, our chalet for the next few days. By Roxanne Reid The N2 between Cape Town and the Garden Route is the unlikely venue for a great new place to stop for breakfast, lunch, or treats to take away as padkos. Even the architecture of Tredici in Swellendam give you a taste of Europe. By Roxanne Reid Gorgeous views of The Knysna Heads – check. Consistently good food – check. Friendly, efficient service – check. I’m talking about the East Head Café in Knysna and why you have to visit. And no, it's not just because TripAdvisor ranks it number 1 of 108 restaurants in Knysna. By Roxanne Reid
Over the past few posts I’ve been sharing some of my favourite places along the Wilderness–Knysna section of the Garden Route. Today’s post is for the adventure junkies among us, people with ants in their pants unless they’re up and at ’em, doing something that makes them sweat. By Roxanne Reid
It’s easy to work up an appetite on the Garden Route, what with the glut of forest hikes, beach walks, water sports and adventure sports on offer. Here are a few of my favourite refueling stops for a food feast. By Roxanne Reid
As you will know from the previous post, I’m a sucker for the delights of the Wilderness–Knysna section of the Garden Route National Park. And there are lots and lots of them. By Roxanne Reid
It doesn’t matter how often you’ve been to the Wilderness–Knysna area on the Garden Route, it always has the power to enchant and amaze. |
